9am – 12pm, The Carter Center Presidential Rose Garden

Pruning Clinic

Come and learn the art of pruning roses & other useful techniques. Participants will learn valuable hands-on experience in pruning as well as answers to rose growing questions from Consulting Rosarians of the American Rose Society as well as local society members. Participants are asked to bring sturdy garden gloves and pruning shears if possible. Christopher Huffer, Consulting Rosarian and curator of the Carter Center Library Rose Garden, will lead this workshop.

Roses, Lessons Learned

If you are newer (5 years and less) to roses this is a MUST for you! Greater Atlanta Rose Society welcomes our very own David Baker, Consulting Rosarian. David is going to provide tips and tricks he has learned over his years of growing and showing roses. It will take you over a number of topics – from pruning to soil and everything in between. Those who have been doing roses for years are sure to walk away with some new ideas as well!

Rose Exhibiting 101

Cindy Dale, Master Rosarian and Deep South District Director, has grown roses since 1995 and has 285 roses at her residence. She won awards and titles at the American Rose Society including Hybrid Tea Queen, King and mini-King at the 2023 National ARS Show. Dale also received the ARS Silver Honor Medal. She will help us prepare for the rose show held in May at the Atlanta Botanical Gardens by covering the basics of exhibiting in the Horticulture Division of a rose show.

Entrance to the show is included with The Botanical Garden admission ticket. Come and enjoy the gorgeous blooms all grown by gardeners from Atlanta, North Georgia, and beyond. Consulting Rosarians will be on hand to answer all of your rose gardening questions.

GARS Organic Gardening Series. We welcome our very own Jessica Jordan, Consulting Rosarian. According to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in the US, “food is the single largest category of material placed in municipal landfills, where it emits methane, a powerful greenhouse gas.” So how do we keep our food waste out of the landfills? Jessica will teach you how to put worms to work and turn those kitchen scraps into compost your roses with love!

GARS Organic Gardening Series. We welcome our very own Christopher Huffer, Consulting Rosarian and curator of the Carter Center Library Rose Garden which is a public no spray garden here in Atlanta. Christopher is a collector of roses including a number of rare roses and currently has over 460 roses in his private garden. Christopher shows you what are some of the best roses to plant here in Atlanta and what you want to avoid. When you start with strong roses you keep your garden organic.
